Healthy Hoopie Habits - Day 29: Identify and Refine

Every day, we’re living out habits. Whether they’re helpful or harmful, intentional or unintentional, structured or chaotic—they’re happening. And often, we’re so deep in the routine of it all, we don’t even realize we’re running on autopilot.

Our days move fast. There’s noise coming at us from every direction. Expectations to meet. Responsibilities to juggle. And if we’re not careful, we can get swept up in doing what we have to do without ever checking in on how we’re doing it—or who we’re becoming in the process.

A Simple Daily Check-In

One thing I’ve noticed in my own life is how helpful it is to reflect at the end of the day. It’s a natural rhythm for me and Cody—we ask each other things like:

  • What did you do today?

  • How was your day?

  • What did you get done?

It’s a sweet moment of connection, but it’s also a checkpoint. And when I take it a little deeper, it becomes a personal inventory:

  • Did I do what I said I’d do?

  • Was I intentional with my time?

  • Did I show up as the person I want to be?

Some days, that answer feels strong. Other days, I know I’ve drifted. Maybe I wasn’t fully present. Maybe I let busyness run the show. Maybe I acted out of stress or distraction.

But that’s why this reflection matters—because I want to live like each day is a gift. And I want to be proud of how I used it.

It’s Not Just About Productivity

Let’s be clear: this habit isn’t about measuring your worth by how much you got done. I’ve fallen into that trap too, where my only gauge for a “good” day was how productive I was.

But what really lingers with me at night are questions like:

  • Was I present?

  • Did I give people my attention?

  • Did I respond with patience?

  • Did I show up authentically?

That’s what leaves me either settled—or restless—when my head hits the pillow.

How to Identify and Refine Your Habits

If you feel like you’ve been drifting, living in reaction mode, or just not showing up how you want to—this habit is your reset.

Here’s a practical way to start:

1. Do a Personal Audit

Take one full day and write down everything you do—from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed.

  • What time did you wake up?

  • What did you do in the first 30 minutes?

  • When did you scroll? How long?

  • When did you move your body? Eat?

  • What did you work on? For how long?

The point here isn’t to shame yourself—it’s to become aware.

2. Notice the Patterns

After your audit, ask yourself:

  • Which of these habits serve me?

  • Which ones drain me or distract me?

  • What would I like my day to look like?

3. Refine from There

You don’t need to overhaul your life. You just need to take one step at a time—tweak, adjust, refine. Build what you want to keep. Let go of what doesn’t align. And start stacking small wins that move you closer to the kind of life and rhythm you want.

You Don’t Have to Wait

This isn’t a January 1st kind of thing.
You don’t have to wait for the start of a new week or month.
You can start now.

Just start paying attention and start living on purpose.

I love the book Atomic Habits by James Clear for this reason. It’s such a helpful resource for learning how to build strong habits, break the ones that aren’t serving you, and shift your systems to support the person you’re becoming.

Lean Into this Power Daily

Every day is made up of a series of small decisions—and those decisions become habits. The goal isn’t perfection, and it’s not about rigid structure either. It’s about awareness. About recognizing the patterns that are shaping your life and choosing to refine them with intention. When you pause long enough to take inventory, you give yourself the opportunity to course correct, to grow, and to show up just a little bit better tomorrow. That’s what this habit is about—ownership, clarity, and moving forward with purpose.
