Healthy Hoopie Habits - Day 17: Keep Your Values Close
One of the most grounding things you can do in life—and in your personal growth journey—is to regularly remind yourself of what really matters.
It sounds simple, but this kind of check-in can have a huge impact on how you show up each day.
We all have values, beliefs, and a sense of purpose that drives us. But if we’re not careful, it’s easy to drift. The world is loud. It’s full of shoulds and musts and distractions that pull us in every direction. It’s easy to get caught up in things that seem urgent but aren’t important. That’s when the stress creeps in. That’s when things feel out of balance.
That’s why I find it so important to regularly remind myself of what matters most.
Start With Awareness
Before you can return to your values, you have to first know them. What actually matters to you? What kind of life are you trying to build? What is your purpose and what are you passionate about?
This is deeply personal—and it’s something that may evolve as you grow. What mattered to you five years ago may not hold the same weight now.
Some people like to journal or write these things out. Others (like me!) tend to talk it out in real-life conversations. Whether it’s talking with a friend, a spouse, or just saying things out loud on a walk—it helps to voice it. Often, when I’m chatting with Cody about what excites me, what’s important, or what we’re building, the core values just naturally come to the surface.
Frequent Informal Check-In
This habit doesn’t have to be a big dramatic moment. It’s more like a quiet nudge. A simple check-in with yourself every so often:
Am I living in alignment with what I say I care about?
Do my daily actions reflect what actually matters to me?
What is my why—and have I lost sight of it lately?
It’s simply about realignment. When you feel overwhelmed or scattered, chances are something is pulling you away from your purpose. This check-in is a chance to come back to center.
The Fire That Fuels You
Your “why” is what helps you keep going on the hard days. It’s what makes a single workout meaningful. A healthy meal intentional. A quiet, disciplined choice powerful. Because those actions aren’t random—they’re part of becoming the person you’re meant to be.
Even the messy seasons serve a purpose. They’re part of the refining. Part of the pruning. Part of the story.
When you’re clear on your values and your purpose, you won’t be so easily swayed by outside noise. You’ll feel less chaos, less chaos, and more clarity.
You’re here to live a life that aligns with what really matters.
So take a few minutes today. Sit with your thoughts. Reflect on what’s true for you. Return to your “why.” Let it ground you. Let it guide you. And let it light that fire in your soul to keep going.
