Healthy Hoopie Habits - Day 4: Time Block Your Day
I used to live by a long, messy to-do list. The kind that felt never-ending. I'd write everything down—every task, every idea, every little thing I might want to get done—and then rush through the day trying to check off as many boxes as possible.
It felt like it was the only route to productivity, but the irony was at the end of days, I typically felt like all of my checked boxes didn’t amount to something truly meaningful. Work was done, but I knew there was room for improvement.
Then I tried time blocking—and everything changed.
What Is Time Blocking?
Time blocking is simple: it’s just giving your tasks a time and a place in your day. Instead of a huge running list that stares at you all day long, you choose what matters most and when you’ll work on it.
Why I Love It
I’ve always been a pen-and-paper checklist girly. I love the feel of writing things down and physically checking them off. But even with that, my days often lacked structure. I knew I had room to execute better.
So I started time blocking—and I fell in love.
It gave me structure without stress.
How I Use It Daily
Here’s what it looks like for me:
Start with the big messy list – I brain dump everything that’s floating around in my head.
Pick my top three – What are the three most important things I need to do today? If I do those well, I can call it a win.
Plug them into my calendar – I look at my day, hour by hour, and block out time for those top three.
That’s it. It’s not rigid—it’s freeing. Because instead of reacting all day, I’m intentionally acting on what I already decided matters most.
What It’s Helped Me With
Clarity – I know exactly what’s important today and when I’ll do it.
Peace – I don’t need to do everything, just the right things.
Presence – I’m not multitasking or rushing through the day. I’m focused.
Margin – I even block off time for the unexpected. Life happens, but I have room to breathe.
This habit has helped me stop chasing productivity for productivity’s sake. It’s helped me do good work on a few important things instead of shallow work on everything.
Try It With Your Next To-Do List
Next time you go to write that big list, try this:
Choose your top 3 priorities.
Look at your day and block time to actually do them.
Leave space for margin.
Give yourself the gift of focus.
