Healthy Hoopie Habits - Day 6: Outdoor Morning Movement
The simple act of stepping outside in the morning and moving your body is one of the most powerful things you can do to set the tone for your day. I know it is for me and that is why it is number 6 within our series Healthy Hoopie Habits.
Start the Day With Stillness + Motion
My mornings always start the same way. I wake up, feed the dogs, drink water, read my Bible — and then I get outside.
It’s not about steps or calories or a true training session. It’s what I call time for “Steps, Sniffs, and Sunshine”. Getting my body moving in a gentle, intentional way. Breathing in the fresh air. Letting my eyes soak up the morning light. Feeling grounded before the day begins.
Why It Works
You know that groggy, sluggish feeling that sometimes lingers in the morning?
That’s often a signal your body needs light, movement, and rhythm.
Here’s why stepping outside first thing helps:
☀️ Sunlight in your eyes (even if it's cloudy) helps regulate your circadian rhythm, which improves sleep quality, energy, and hormone balance.
🚶♀️ Gentle movement wakes up your system, boosts circulation, and supports digestion.
🧠 Nature and stillness have proven mental health benefits — reduced stress, improved mood, and increased focus throughout the day.
It’s the opposite of scrolling your phone or rushing into your inbox. It’s a deliberate decision to move into the day with intention, instead of reaction.
Try It This Week
Sometime this week, make it a point to step outside during your morning routine. Especially now — during the summer months — take advantage of the fresh air before the heat of the day sets in.
Bring your pups, listen to a podcast, walk in silence and think through your thoughts, play music that lifts your mood. Make it a special part of your morning.
Thanks for being here - see you tomorrow for Healthy Hoopie Habit #7.
